  • ρ (rho) is the density of the mixture.

Steps to Find Density:

  1. Determine the Total Mass (m):
    • This involves adding the individual masses of all components in the mixture.
    • For example, if you have a saltwater solution, add the mass of the salt to the mass of the water.
  2. Determine the Total Volume (V):
    • Measure the total volume occupied by the mixture.
    • For liquid solutions, you can typically measure this directly using a graduated cylinder or beaker.
    • Important Note: When mixing liquids, the final volume may not always equal the sum of individual component volumes due to molecular interactions.
  3. Apply the Density Formula:
    • Once you have the total mass (m) and total volume (V), use the formula ρ = m/V to calculate the density.
    • The resulting density will typically be in units of grams per milliliter (g/mL) or kilograms per liter (kg/L), or grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³).

Examples:

  • Saltwater solution: If you dissolve 100g of salt into 900 mL of water (final volume = 950 mL), the total mass of the solution will be (100g + 900g = 1000g). The density would be 1000g/950 mL ≈ 1.05 g/mL
  • Mixing Liquids: If you mix 500 mL of ethanol (mass is 395g) with 500 mL of water (mass is 500g), the final volume might be 980 mL (due to volume contraction). The total mass would be (395g + 500g = 895g) and the density would be 895g/980 mL ≈ 0.91 g/mL.

Practical Considerations:

  • Accuracy: Accurate measurements of mass and volume are essential for precise density calculations.
  • Volume Changes: Be aware of possible volume changes when mixing liquids; they don’t always add up perfectly.
  • Temperature: Temperature changes affect the volume and, consequently, the density of materials. So, ensure that you are calculating density at a consistent temperature.
