How to Remove Fog from Mobile Camera Lens?

Published in Mobile Photography 2 mins read

Here's how to remove fog from your mobile phone's camera lens:

  • Gentle Wiping: Use a clean, dry, and soft microfiber cloth (like those used for eyeglasses) to gently wipe the lens. Wipe radially from the center outwards in one direction to avoid scratching the lens.

  • Humidity Control (if available): If you have a humidity control box (often used for camera equipment), remove the SIM tray from your phone and place the phone inside the box. The box will help to draw out the moisture causing the fog.

  • Warm (not hot) Air: Gently blow warm air (from a hair dryer on a low setting, held at a distance) across the lens. Be very careful not to overheat the phone, as this can cause damage.

Why Fog Occurs:

Fog forms on the lens due to condensation. This happens when there's a temperature difference between the lens surface and the surrounding environment. Warm, humid air coming into contact with a cooler lens will cause moisture to condense on the surface.

Important Considerations:

  • Avoid harsh materials: Don't use paper towels, tissues, or rough cloths, as these can scratch the lens.
  • Don't use liquids: Avoid using any liquids or cleaning solutions unless specifically designed for camera lenses.
  • Be gentle: Apply minimal pressure when wiping the lens to prevent damage.
