How to Use Smart Objects for Mockups?

Published in Mockup Design 4 mins read

Using Smart Objects in mockups is a straightforward way to easily replace placeholder content with your own designs while maintaining quality and perspective. It simplifies the process of visualizing your artwork on various products or scenes.

Here's how to use Smart Objects for mockups, based on a common workflow:

Simple Steps to Apply Your Design

The process typically involves a few key steps within photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop. Smart Objects act as containers for your image, allowing it to be transformed and edited non-destructively within the mockup file.

Below are the steps outlined in the reference from March 9, 2022:

  1. Step 1: Download Your Mockup.
    • Obtain a mockup file, usually in a format like .psd (Photoshop Document), that is designed with Smart Objects. These files contain pre-set layers and perspectives ready for your artwork.
  2. Step 2: Find The Smart Object Layer.
    • Open the downloaded mockup file in your software.
    • Navigate to the Layers panel.
    • Look for layers specifically designated for placing your design. These are typically labeled clearly (e.g., "Your Design Here," "Place Image," "Smart Object Layer") and have a special icon in the layer thumbnail indicating they are a Smart Object.
    • Double-click on this Smart Object layer thumbnail. This action opens the Smart Object content in a new, separate window.
  3. Step 3: Place Your Image.
    • With the Smart Object's content open in a new window, you can now place your actual design or image file.
    • Use the "Place" or "Import" function in your software to bring your artwork into this new window.
    • Your design should now appear within the Smart Object's workspace.
  4. Step 4: Adjust As Necessary.
    • Resize, reposition, or rotate your design within the Smart Object window so that it fits the desired area correctly.
    • Ensure your design covers the canvas of the Smart Object window as intended for the mockup.
    • Note: Any changes made here will be applied proportionally and in perspective back in the main mockup file.
  5. Step 5: Save!
    • After adjusting your design within the Smart Object window, you must save the Smart Object itself.
    • Go to File > Save (not Save As) or press Ctrl+S (Windows) / Cmd+S (Mac).
    • Once the Smart Object is saved, close its window.
    • Return to the main mockup file window. You will see your design automatically updated and transformed onto the mockup surface, adopting the correct perspective and lighting effects set up in the template.

Why Use Smart Objects?

Smart Objects are powerful because they:

  • Preserve Image Quality: They maintain the original resolution and quality of your placed image.
  • Allow Non-Destructive Edits: Transformations (scaling, rotating, skewing) and filters applied to a Smart Object in the main mockup can be edited or removed at any time without permanently affecting the original content.
  • Enable Easy Updates: You can easily go back into the Smart Object, replace the image with a new one, save, and the mockup updates instantly.
