How do you revive model paint?

Published in Model Painting 2 mins read

To revive model paint, especially acrylics that have become thick or dried out, you can add a few drops of water or a suitable acrylic paint medium to the paint and thoroughly shake or mix it until it returns to its original consistency.

Steps to Revive Model Paint:

Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Assess the Paint's Condition: Determine how dried out the paint is. If it's just slightly thick, a small amount of water or medium will suffice. If it's completely dried into a solid mass, revival might not be possible.

  2. Add Water or Acrylic Medium:

    • Water: Add a couple of drops of distilled water to the paint. Be cautious not to add too much, as it can thin the paint excessively and affect its opacity and binding properties.
    • Acrylic Medium: Using an acrylic paint medium (specifically designed for thinning acrylic paints) is often preferable to water. It helps maintain the paint's consistency, adhesion, and finish.
  3. Mix Thoroughly: The most important step is thorough mixing. This can be done by:

    • Shaking: If the paint is in a sealed container, tightly close it and shake vigorously for a prolonged period. This ensures that the water or medium is evenly distributed.
    • Stirring: If shaking isn't feasible, use a toothpick, cocktail stick or dedicated stirrer to thoroughly combine.
  4. Check Consistency: After mixing, check the consistency of the paint. It should be smooth and easily brushable. If it's still too thick, add another drop or two of water or medium and repeat the mixing process.

  5. Prevent Future Drying:

    • Proper Storage: Always ensure the paint container is tightly sealed after use.
    • Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Store paints in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
    • Clean the Lid: Clean any dried paint from around the lid before sealing to ensure a tight fit.

By following these steps, you can effectively revive many types of model paint, extending their lifespan and saving you money.
