Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is the RNA molecule that, along with ribosomal proteins, makes up the ribosome, the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis.

The Role of rRNA in Protein Synthesis

rRNA plays a central role in the process of translating messenger RNA (mRNA) into protein. Here's a breakdown of its function:

  • Ribosome Structure: rRNA molecules combine with ribosomal proteins to form the ribosome, which has a large and a small subunit.
  • mRNA Binding: The ribosome binds to mRNA, which contains the genetic code for the protein being synthesized.
  • tRNA Binding: The ribosome provides binding sites for transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules, which carry specific amino acids.
  • Peptide Bond Formation: rRNA catalyzes the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids, linking them together to form a polypeptide chain. This is the key step in creating the protein.
  • Translocation: The ribosome moves along the mRNA molecule, reading the code and adding more amino acids to the growing polypeptide chain.

Essentially, rRNA provides the structural and catalytic framework for protein synthesis to occur within the ribosome. While mRNA carries the genetic code and tRNA brings the amino acids, rRNA makes the protein by facilitating the peptide bond formation.
