Monkeypox is called monkeypox because the virus was first isolated from a monkey in Africa. While monkeys played a role in its discovery, it's important to note that the reservoir, or primary host, for monkeypox is in rodents, specifically rodents in Central and West Africa. We've known about monkeypox for decades and have been interested in it partly because it's related to smallpox.
