Mosquitoes are repelled by a variety of scents and substances. Some of the things they hate most include:
- Minty fragrances: Peppermint plants and their essential oil are known to deter mosquitoes. You can crush peppermint leaves and rub them on your skin for a natural repellent.
- Citronella: This common ingredient in insect repellents is also disliked by mosquitoes.
- Cedar: The scent of cedarwood is unpleasant to mosquitoes, and cedar oil is often used in insect repellents.
- Catnip: While known for its effect on cats, catnip also acts as a repellent for mosquitoes.
- Patchouli: This strong, earthy scent is not a fan favorite for mosquitoes.
- Lemongrass: The citrusy scent of lemongrass is effective in keeping mosquitoes away.
- Lavender: Known for its calming properties, lavender also works as a natural mosquito repellent.
These scents can be incorporated into DIY repellents, or you can use commercially available products containing these ingredients.
Additionally, mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, which we exhale when we breathe. They also are drawn to warm bodies, dark clothing, and sweat. By limiting your exposure to these attractants, you can further reduce the chances of being bitten.
