Moving Animation Clips on Tracks

In MotionBuilder, managing your animation sequences often involves rearranging clips on various tracks. This is a fundamental task for timing and sequencing your character's actions or scene elements. The primary method for repositioning these clips on the timeline is through selection and dragging.

Methods for Moving Clips

Based on the standard workflow, here's how you move clips on a track:

  • Move a Single Clip:

      1. Select a clip or many clips. (Start by selecting the specific clip you want to move).
      1. Drag the clip(s) left and right on the track. (Click and drag the selected clip horizontally along the track to its desired position).
  • Move Multiple Clips:

      1. Select a clip or many clips. (To select multiple clips, you can Ctrl-click each one to select them).
      1. Drag the clip(s) left and right on the track. (With multiple clips selected, clicking and dragging any one of the selected clips will move all of them simultaneously, maintaining their relative positions).
  • Move Multiple Clips While Preserving Relative Distance:

    • You can slash (/)-drag one clip to make all the clips to the right retain their distance from each other on the track. This specific action allows you to insert space or shift a block of clips down the track without affecting the spacing between the clips themselves.

These methods provide flexibility in arranging your animation elements on the timeline, allowing for precise control over timing and sequence.
