How to Clean a Motocross Helmet?

Published in Motocross Helmet Maintenance 4 mins read

Keeping your motocross helmet clean is crucial for hygiene, comfort, and maintaining its condition. While a thorough cleaning involves several steps, the process can be quite simple, starting with basic techniques like hosing the helmet and letting it dry in the shade, as highlighted in common practices.

Essential Supplies for Helmet Cleaning

Before you start, gather the necessary supplies:

  • Mild Soap or Helmet-Specific Cleaner: Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage materials.
  • Water: A hose is useful for the initial rinse.
  • Soft Cloths or Microfibre Towels: For washing and drying.
  • Soft Brush: For stubborn dirt (optional).
  • Bucket or Sink: For washing removable parts.
  • Shine Product: Like a "modal shine and go" spray mentioned in cleaning practices, for the final touch.

Step-by-Step Motocross Helmet Cleaning Guide

Follow these steps for a clean and fresh helmet:

Step 1: Preparation

  • Remove any detachable parts such as the peak/visor (if applicable) and the interior liner and cheek pads. Most modern motocross helmets have removable liners.

Step 2: Exterior Cleaning

  • Hose the helmet: As part of the initial cleaning process, thoroughly hose the exterior of the helmet to remove loose dirt, mud, and debris.
  • Apply a small amount of mild soap or helmet cleaner to a damp cloth.
  • Gently wipe down the entire outer shell, paying attention to vents and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Clean the strap thoroughly. Use soap and water to remove sweat and dirt buildup.
  • Rinse the exterior completely with clean water, ensuring no soap residue remains.

Step 3: Interior Cleaning

  • Wash the Liner and Cheek Pads:
    • These can usually be hand-washed in cool water with mild detergent or helmet-specific cleaner.
    • Gently squeeze the parts to work the soap in, then rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
    • Alternatively, some liners can be machine-washed on a gentle cycle in a laundry bag, but always check the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Clean the Inside of the Shell: Wipe down the EPS foam and inner shell surfaces with a damp cloth (using a little mild soap if needed), being careful not to soak the foam.

Step 4: Drying

  • Crucially, hang the helmet up in the shade to dry. Avoid direct sunlight, which can degrade the helmet's materials over time.
  • Ensure good airflow around the helmet.
  • Hang the washed liner and pads separately to air dry completely. Do not use heat sources like dryers or radiators.
  • Allow ample time for everything to dry fully. This can take 24-48 hours depending on humidity. Moisture left inside can lead to mildew and odors.

Step 5: Reassembly & Finishing

  • Once completely dry, reinsert the liner and cheek pads into the helmet shell according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Reattach the peak/visor if you removed it.
  • When the helmet is dry, spray it with a modal shine and go (or similar product designed for helmet shells) to bring them back to new and restore the finish. Buff gently with a clean microfibre cloth.

Quick Tips for Helmet Care

  • Regular Cleaning: Clean your helmet regularly, especially after muddy rides, to prevent dirt from building up.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Solvents, petroleum products, and strong cleaning agents can damage the helmet's shell, liner, and EPS foam, compromising its protective capabilities.
  • Inspect During Cleaning: Use cleaning time to inspect your helmet for any signs of damage, such as cracks, dents, or worn straps/liner parts.

By following these steps, including the essential practice of hosing the helmet and drying it in the shade before applying a finishing spray, you can keep your motocross helmet clean, comfortable, and in good condition for longer.
