Tools and Supplies Needed

Published in Motorcycle Chain Maintenance 4 mins read

Keeping your motorcycle chain clean and well-lubricated is essential for longevity and performance.

Maintaining your motorcycle chain involves regular cleaning to remove dirt and grime, followed by applying a suitable lubricant. This process helps prevent wear and tear, ensuring smooth power delivery.

Before you begin, gather the necessary items:

Item Purpose
Motorcycle Stand To lift the rear wheel for easy access
Chain Cleaner Specifically designed for motorcycle chains
Chain Brush Multi-sided brush for effective cleaning
Lint-Free Rags For wiping and removing excess
Chain Lubricant O-ring, X-ring, or Z-ring compatible lube
Gloves Protect your hands from grime and chemicals
Cardboard/Tray To protect the ground from drips

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Motorcycle Chain

Cleaning removes abrasive particles that cause wear. Follow these steps for a thorough clean:

  1. Preparation: Place your motorcycle on a stand so the rear wheel can spin freely. Lay down cardboard or a tray underneath the chain to catch any drips. Put on your gloves.
  2. Apply Chain Cleaner: Spray the dedicated motorcycle chain cleaner generously onto the entire chain. Allow it to soak for a few minutes according to the product instructions to break down grease and dirt.
  3. Brush the Chain: Use your chain brush to scrub the chain links. Brush from the top, get the sides, and get the bottom of the chain to work the cleaner into the links and loosen stubborn grime. Spin the wheel slowly as you brush different sections.
  4. Wipe Down the Chain: Use a clean, lint-free rag to wipe the chain down. Make sure that rag is on the bottom of the chain, wipe it down just like this. And then spin the wheel slowly to pull the chain through the rag, removing the cleaner and loosened dirt. Repeat with a clean section of the rag until no more dirt comes off.
  5. Rinse (if necessary): Some cleaners require rinsing with water. Check your cleaner's instructions. If rinsing, be careful not to spray water directly into wheel bearings or seals.
  6. Dry the Chain: If you rinsed the chain, or if it's damp, dry it thoroughly. You can use a clean, dry rag or compressed air. Ensure the chain is completely dry before lubricating to allow the lube to adhere properly.

Step-by-Step Guide to Oiling (Lubricating) Your Motorcycle Chain

Lubricating the chain reduces friction, prevents rust, and keeps the O/X/Z-rings healthy.

  1. Ensure Chain is Dry: As mentioned, lubrication should only be applied to a clean and dry chain.
  2. Apply Lubricant: Hold the nozzle of your chain lubricant can just above the lower run of the chain, aiming at the inside where the rollers meet the side plates. Slowly spin the wheel forward and apply a steady, even coat of lubricant along the entire length of the chain. Don't over-apply; a thin, consistent layer is sufficient.
  3. Target Key Areas: Focus the spray on the pins, rollers, and inner plates. These are the crucial points requiring lubrication. Avoid spraying the tire or brakes.
  4. Let it Set: Allow the lubricant to penetrate and set for at least 15-30 minutes, or ideally longer, as recommended by the lubricant manufacturer. This allows the solvents in the lube to evaporate, leaving behind the protective film. Lubricating after a ride when the chain is warm can also help the lube penetrate better.
  5. Wipe Excess: After the setting time, use a clean rag to wipe off any excess lubricant from the outer surfaces of the chain. Excess lube attracts dirt.

Maintenance Frequency

The frequency of cleaning and oiling depends on your riding conditions:

  • Regular Riding (dry conditions): Every 300-600 miles.
  • Wet or Dirty Conditions: After every ride exposed to rain, mud, or excessive dust.
  • Long Trips: Before starting and periodically during long journeys.

Regular chain maintenance significantly extends the life of your chain and sprockets, saving you money and ensuring safer riding.
