How to Remove a Clutch Cable From a Lever

Published in Motorcycle Maintenance 3 mins read

Removing a clutch cable from its lever typically involves aligning slots in the adjuster components and the lever perch to free the cable end.

To remove a clutch cable from the lever, you must back off the adjuster and lock nut until the slots in each align with the slot in the perch. Then, pull the cable out of the end of the adjuster and thread it through the slot in all four components (the adjuster, lock nut, perch, and lever) until it is perpendicular to the lever. Finally, pull downward on the cable, and the barrel at the end of the cable will slide out of the lever.

Step-by-Step Guide to Clutch Cable Removal

This process focuses on removing the cable from the lever mechanism itself, which usually involves manipulating the cable adjuster located near the lever perch.

Here's a breakdown of the steps:

  1. Locate the Adjuster and Lock Nut: Find the cable adjuster assembly situated where the clutch cable connects to the lever perch. This usually consists of a barrel-shaped adjuster and a lock nut.
  2. Loosen and Align Slots: Loosen the lock nut and thread the adjuster barrel inwards (towards the lever perch). Continue backing off the adjuster and lock nut until the small slots cut into their sides are aligned with the slot in the lever perch itself. The slot in the lever should also be aligned with these.
  3. Free the Cable from the Adjuster: With the slots aligned, you can now pull the clutch cable outwards, away from the end of the adjuster barrel. The cable should come free from the adjuster's threaded section.
  4. Thread Through the Slots: Once the cable is free from the adjuster, carefully thread the cable sideways through the newly aligned slots in the adjuster, the lock nut, the perch, and the lever. Move the cable until it is positioned perpendicular to the lever.
  5. Release the Barrel End: With the cable positioned perpendicular to the lever and threaded through the slots, gently pull the cable downwards. The small barrel or 'nig' at the very end of the cable, which sits in a recess on the lever, should slide out of its seating, completely detaching the cable from the lever.

Following these steps allows you to safely and effectively disconnect the clutch cable from the lever perch.
