The old name of Mount Everest was Peak XV.
Before being officially named Mount Everest, the mountain was first labelled as “H” and then, by 1850, was changed to Peak XV. This name was in use until 1865 when it was renamed in honour of Sir George Everest, the Surveyor-General of India from 1830 to 1843.
Here is a table summarizing the name changes:
Label | Year |
---|---|
"H" | Before 1850 |
Peak XV | By 1850 |
Mount Everest | 1865 |
