How Do You Use Clear Mounting Tape?

Published in Mounting Tape Usage 3 mins read

To use clear mounting tape effectively, prepare the surfaces, apply the tape, and press firmly to create a strong, permanent bond.

Clear mounting tape provides a convenient alternative to nails or screws for attaching items to walls and other surfaces. Its strength comes from its adhesive properties and the proper preparation and application process.

Preparing Surfaces for Mounting Tape

Before applying clear mounting tape, ensure the surfaces are clean and dry. This is a critical first step for achieving maximum bond strength.

  • Clean the surfaces: Use rubbing alcohol or a mild detergent to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grime from both the item you want to mount and the surface where it will be placed.
  • Allow to dry: Ensure both surfaces are completely dry before applying the tape. Moisture can significantly weaken the adhesive bond.

Applying Clear Mounting Tape

Once the surfaces are prepared, you can apply the tape.

  1. Cut the tape: Cut the mounting tape to the desired length. It's often recommended to use multiple short strips rather than one long one for larger or heavier items, distributing the weight more evenly.
  2. Apply to the item or surface: Apply the tape to one of the surfaces you intend to bond. Press down firmly to ensure the tape adheres well to the first surface.
  3. Remove the liner: Peel off the protective liner from the other side of the tape, exposing the adhesive.

Placement and Bonding

With the adhesive exposed, carefully position your item on the desired surface.

  • Placement: Carefully align the item before making contact with the surface, as the bond is often permanent and repositioning can be difficult or damage the tape/surfaces.
  • Press Firmly: Once in position, press firmly on the item. As highlighted in the reference from the Gorilla Mounting Tape video, pressing firmly is essential as the tape conforms to the surface and creates a strong permanent bond. Apply pressure evenly across the entire area where the tape is applied for several seconds to ensure good contact and activation of the adhesive.

By following these steps, including proper preparation, careful application, and firm pressing, you can effectively use clear mounting tape to securely fasten items.
