How Do You Clean Mouse Buttons?

Published in Mouse Cleaning 2 mins read

Cleaning your mouse buttons is essential for maintaining performance and hygiene. The method depends on your mouse's design, but generally involves removing debris and wiping surfaces.

Simple Methods for Cleaning Mouse Buttons

You can effectively clean mouse buttons using common household items and techniques, especially focusing on getting underneath the buttons and removing surface grime.

Cleaning Under Buttons (Without Removable Shells)

Many mice don't have shells that easily detach to clean the internal components. For these mice, a specific technique using compressed air is recommended:

  • Insert a fingernail in the seams: Gently place your fingernail in the small gap or seam around the mouse buttons.
  • Gently lift the buttons: Apply slight upward pressure with your fingernail to slightly lift the button edge away from the mouse body. Be careful not to lift too hard or you could damage the button.
  • Use compressed air: Give them a brief burst of compressed air. Direct the air into the gap you've created. This helps dislodge and blow away dust, crumbs, and other small debris that accumulates underneath and affects button performance.

Removing Sticky Residue

Sticky spots or general grime on the button surfaces can be wiped away.

  • Prepare a cotton swab: Apply a small amount of solution to the cotton swab. A common cleaning solution for electronics is isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), but use sparingly and ensure it's not dripping wet.
  • Wipe the residue: Wipe away any sticky residue from the surface of the mouse buttons and the surrounding areas. Use the cotton swab to carefully clean along the edges and in the seams where dirt collects.

General Cleaning Tips

For effective and safe cleaning:

  • Always turn off or unplug your mouse before cleaning.
  • Avoid spraying liquid directly onto the mouse buttons or into any openings.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth for wiping down the main surfaces.
  • Allow the mouse to dry completely before plugging it back in or turning it on.

By following these steps, you can keep your mouse buttons clean and ensure smooth, responsive clicks.
