The trigeminal nerve (CN V) is responsible for sensation in the face, including the mouth. It also controls chewing muscles. The facial nerve (CN VII) is responsible for controlling facial expressions, including mouth movement.
Other nerves involved with mouth function:
- Chorda tympani nerve: Carries taste information from the front two-thirds of the tongue.
- Lingual nerve: Carries sensory information from the front two-thirds of the tongue, including pain, temperature, and touch.
- Buccal nerve: Provides sensation to the cheek and gums.
- Glossopharyngeal nerve: Carries taste information from the back of the tongue.
