How do you find your key in a flat key?

Published in Music Theory 1 min read

To find the key of a song in a flat key signature, you locate the flat next to the last flat in the key signature.

Here's how to do it:

  • Identify the flats: Look at the key signature to see which flats are present.

  • Find the second-to-last flat: The key is named after the second-to-last flat in the key signature.

    • For example, if the key signature has two flats (B♭ and E♭), the key is B♭. B♭ is the flat next to the last flat listed (E♭).

This rule applies when identifying major keys with flat key signatures. The concept and rule will not apply to a key signature that is in sharp.
