Why do nails grow?

Published in Nail Growth 1 min read

Fingernails grow because the cells that make up the nail are constantly being produced. These cells are located beneath the nail bed and are constantly dividing and pushing older cells forward. This process is similar to how other cells in our body are constantly renewed.

Think of it like a conveyor belt: new cells are added at the base of the nail, and as they mature, they are pushed forward, making the nail appear to grow. The rate of this growth varies depending on factors like age, diet, and overall health.
