Why is the white part of my nail uneven?

Published in Nail Health 3 mins read

The unevenness of the white part of your nail, known as the lunula, or more generally the white spots or lines, is most often due to minor trauma to the nail matrix, but other factors can also contribute. These white markings are referred to as leukonychia.

Common Causes of Uneven White Nail Appearance

  • Minor Trauma: This is the most frequent cause. Bumping your nail, hitting it, or even overly aggressive manicures can damage the nail matrix (where the nail grows from), leading to these white spots or lines as the nail grows out. The damage isn't typically serious and resolves as the nail fully grows out.

  • Leukonychia: This condition presents as white spots or lines on the nails.

    • Leukonychia punctata: Presents as small, white spots and is usually caused by minor trauma.
    • Leukonychia partialis: Occurs when only part of the nail turns white.
  • Nail Biting or Picking: Habits that put stress on the nail matrix can cause irregularities in nail growth and color.

  • Nutritional Deficiencies (Rare): While less common, significant deficiencies in certain vitamins or minerals (like zinc) have been linked to nail abnormalities, including leukonychia. However, nutritional deficiencies are rarely the sole cause of uneven white nails in developed countries.

  • Fungal Infections (Less Likely): In some cases, fungal infections can affect the nail's appearance, although they usually cause thickening, discoloration (yellowish or brownish), and crumbling, rather than distinct white patches.

  • Systemic Diseases (Rare): In rare cases, leukonychia can be a sign of underlying systemic diseases.

What to Do About Uneven White Nails

  1. Observe and Wait: If you suspect minor trauma, simply allow the nail to grow out. It takes about 6 months for a fingernail to fully replace itself, and up to 18 months for a toenail.

  2. Avoid Nail Trauma: Be gentle with your nails. Avoid harsh manicures, excessive filing, and biting or picking your nails.

  3. Consider Your Diet: Ensure you're eating a balanced diet. While deficiencies are rare, it's always good to prioritize healthy eating.

  4. Consult a Doctor: If the white spots are widespread, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms (like nail thickening, pain, or discoloration), consult a doctor or dermatologist to rule out underlying medical conditions or fungal infections.

In most cases, an uneven white part of your nail is harmless and will disappear as your nail grows out. Understanding the potential causes allows you to take appropriate action and address any underlying concerns.
