How Do You Use Nasal Water?

Published in Nasal Care 3 mins read

You use nasal water, typically in the form of a saline solution, to rinse your nasal passages, clearing congestion and irritants. Here's how to do it effectively:

Steps for Using Nasal Water (Saline Solution)

  1. Prepare the Saline Solution: You can use a pre-mixed saline solution available at pharmacies or make your own. If making your own, mix distilled or sterile water with non-iodized salt and, optionally, baking soda. A common recipe is 1 cup (8 ounces) of distilled or sterile water with 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized salt and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda.

  2. Choose Your Delivery Method: Several methods exist for administering nasal water:

    • Neti Pot: A small, teapot-shaped device.
    • Squeeze Bottle: A bottle designed for nasal irrigation.
    • Bulb Syringe: A rubber bulb with a nozzle.
    • Nasal Spray: A pre-filled spray bottle (often with a lower concentration of saline).
  3. Fill the Device: Pour or draw the saline solution into your chosen device.

  4. Position Yourself:

    • Neti Pot/Squeeze Bottle: Stand over a sink, tilt your head to one side at about a 45-degree angle.
    • Bulb Syringe: Lean over a sink or basin.
  5. Administer the Solution:

    • Neti Pot/Squeeze Bottle: Gently insert the spout of the neti pot or squeeze bottle into your upper nostril. Keep your mouth open and breathe through your mouth. Slowly pour or squeeze the solution into your nostril. The water should flow out of the other nostril. Adjust the angle of your head if the solution goes down your throat.
    • Bulb Syringe: Gently insert the tip of the bulb syringe into one nostril. Compress the bulb gently to release the saline solution.
    • Nasal Spray: Insert the nozzle into one nostril and spray gently.
  6. Clear Your Nostrils: After using the saline solution, gently blow your nose to remove any remaining water and mucus. Blow gently, one nostril at a time, to avoid putting pressure on your ears.

  7. Repeat on the Other Side: Repeat the process on the other nostril.

  8. Clean and Dry Your Device: Thoroughly clean and dry your chosen device after each use to prevent bacterial growth.

Important Considerations

  • Water Source: Always use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water to avoid introducing harmful bacteria into your nasal passages. Tap water is generally not recommended unless it has been boiled and cooled.
  • Solution Strength: Use the correct ratio of salt to water. Too much or too little salt can irritate your nasal passages.
  • Frequency: You can use nasal water as often as needed, but generally, one to two times a day is sufficient for most people.
  • Consult a Doctor: If you have any concerns about using nasal water, consult with your doctor.
