How do you use a nose retainer?

Published in Nasal Health 2 mins read

A nose retainer is typically used to maintain the shape of the nose after a rhinoplasty (nose surgery) or to help with nasal breathing issues. The method of use is generally as follows:

Steps for Inserting a Nose Retainer

  1. Open the Retainer: Before insertion, gently open the nose retainer by applying pressure or force to both sides of the device with your fingers. This is often necessary because the retainer is designed to spring back into shape once inside the nostril.
  2. Insert into the Nose: With the retainer open, carefully insert it into the nostril. Make sure the device is properly aligned for comfortable and effective placement.
  3. Latch Effect/Secure Placement: Once inside the nose, the retainer, due to its elastic silicone or other material construction, will naturally revert to its original shape. This creates a "latch effect," securing the retainer within the nasal passage. It essentially springs back to its original form inside the nose.

Important Considerations:

  • Hygiene: Always ensure the retainer is clean before insertion to prevent infection. Wash it with mild soap and water.
  • Comfort: If the retainer causes significant discomfort or pain, consult with your doctor or surgeon.
  • Duration: Follow your doctor's instructions regarding how long and how often to wear the retainer.
  • Type of Retainer: Different types of retainers might have slightly different insertion methods. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions or consult with your healthcare provider.
