Who Has Left NATO?

Published in NATO History 1 min read

No country has ever left NATO since its founding in 1949.

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a military alliance established by the North Atlantic Treaty. Throughout its history, while many nations have joined the alliance, no member state has formally withdrawn.

This stability reflects the perceived benefits of collective security and political cooperation that NATO provides to its members. The treaty outlines procedures for joining, but not for leaving. While Article 13 allows members to withdraw, they must provide a notice of denunciation to the US government (the depositary power) and the withdrawal would take effect one year later. No country has ever initiated this process.

In summary, despite various political shifts and changes in international relations, all countries that have joined NATO have remained members to this day.
