How do you dye with Logwood extract?

Published in Natural Dyeing 2 mins read

Dyeing with logwood extract involves preparing a dye bath and simmering pre-mordanted fibers in it for a specific time.

Preparing Your Logwood Dye Bath

To create a vibrant dye using logwood extract, you first need to prepare the dye concentration before adding your fibers. This ensures the extract is evenly dispersed in the water.

  1. Make the Paste: Take 1 teaspoon (5 grams) of logwood extract powder. Add a small amount of warm water to it and mix thoroughly to form a smooth paste.
  2. Prepare the Dye Bath: Fill a suitably sized saucepan with enough water to comfortably immerse your fiber. Add the logwood extract paste you just made into the water. Stir well to dissolve the paste and create the dye bath.

Dyeing Your Fibers

Once the dye bath is ready, you can introduce your prepared fibers.

  1. Add Fibers: Carefully add your pre-wetted, mordanted fiber to the dye bath. Ensure the fiber is fully submerged and can move freely. (Note: Mordanting is a necessary step before dyeing with many natural dyes like logwood to help the color bind to the fiber).
  2. Heat the Bath: Gently heat the dye bath. Bring the temperature up to a gentle simmer – do not boil vigorously.
  3. Simmering Time: Maintain the gentle simmer for 45 to 60 minutes. This allows the logwood color to transfer effectively to the fiber.
  4. Stir Occasionally: During the simmering process, stir the fiber gently from time to time. This helps ensure even dyeing and prevents the fiber from sticking.

After the simmering time, you can remove the fiber from the dye bath, allow it to cool, and then rinse it thoroughly to remove any excess dye. Logwood is known for producing beautiful purples, violets, and blues, depending on the mordant and pH of the water.
