How to Use a Nebulizer Face Mask

Published in Nebulizer Use 3 mins read

To use a nebulizer face mask, you prepare the medicine, add it to the nebulizer device, and then place the mask securely over your nose and mouth to inhale the medication as the nebulizer runs.

Using a nebulizer with a face mask is a common and effective way to deliver liquid medication directly into the lungs. This method is often preferred for infants, young children, or individuals who may have difficulty using a mouthpiece. The process involves a few simple steps to ensure the medication is delivered correctly and comfortably.

Steps for Using a Nebulizer with a Face Mask

Follow these steps to properly use a nebulizer with a face mask:

  1. Prepare the Medication:

    • Ensure you have the correct liquid medication prescribed by your healthcare provider.
    • Open the plastic vial of medicine.
  2. Add Medicine to the Nebulizer Cup:

    • Carefully pour the vial of medicine into the nebulizer container (often called the medicine cup or nebulizer cup).
    • If prescribed, add saline solution as directed.
    • Close the lid tightly on the medicine cup.
  3. Assemble the Device:

    • Connect the face mask to the top of the medicine cup.
    • Attach the tubing from the bottom of the medicine cup to the air compressor or nebulizer machine.
  4. Position the Mask:

    • Put on the face mask.
    • Adjust the mask so it covers the nose and mouth completely and comfortably. Ensure a good seal around the edges if possible, although some leakage is normal, especially with young children.
  5. Start the Treatment:

    • Make sure the nebulizer (the machine) is ready.
    • Turn on the nebulizer machine. You should see a fine mist coming from the mask.
  6. Breathe Normally:

    • While wearing the mask, breathe in and out normally through your nose and mouth until all the medicine is used. This usually takes between 5 to 15 minutes.
    • Keep the medicine cup upright during the treatment to ensure all the medication is nebulized.
  7. Complete and Clean:

    • When the mist stops, turn off the nebulizer machine.
    • Disconnect the mask and medicine cup from the tubing and machine.
    • Clean the medicine cup and mask according to the manufacturer's instructions and your healthcare provider's guidance.

By following these steps, you can effectively use a nebulizer face mask to receive your prescribed respiratory medication.
