How to connect WAN to laptop?

Published in Network Connection 3 mins read

Connecting your laptop to the Wide Area Network (WAN), which is essentially the internet, typically involves using a router as an intermediary device. While direct connections are sometimes possible depending on the type of WAN connection (like an Ethernet drop directly from a modem configured for a single device), the most common and recommended method for home and office users is via a router.

Here's how you connect your laptop to the internet (WAN) using a router, based on standard networking practices:

Connecting Your Laptop to the Internet via a Router

A router acts as a gateway between your local network (your laptop, phone, etc.) and the internet (WAN). It manages the connection, providing internet access to multiple devices simultaneously.

Follow these steps to set up the connection:

  1. Connect the WAN Cable to the Router:

    • Take the Ethernet cable that provides your internet connection (this cable usually comes from a modem or directly from your wall outlet if it's an Ethernet-based service).
    • Connect the RJ45 cable to WAN port of router. This port is usually labeled "WAN", "Internet", or might be a different color than the other ports.
  2. Connect the Laptop to the Router:

    • Use another standard Ethernet cable (RJ45).
    • Connect one end of this cable to a LAN port on your router. These ports are typically labeled "LAN" and are usually numbered (1, 2, 3, 4).
    • Connect LAN port and laptop(computer) with another network RJ45 cable. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your laptop.
  3. Power On the Router:

    • Insert your wireless router's AC adapter to the DC-IN port and plug it to a power outlet. Ensure the router is powered on. You'll usually see power indicator lights illuminate.
  4. Power On Your Laptop:

    • Turn on your laptop. It should automatically detect the wired Ethernet connection from the router.

Once these steps are completed and the router has established a connection to your internet service provider, your laptop should be able to access the internet through the router.

Summary of Connections

Here's a quick overview of the physical connections involved:

  • Internet Source (Modem/Wall) ➡️ Router (WAN Port)
  • Router (LAN Port) ➡️ Laptop (Ethernet Port)

This setup allows the router to handle the communication with the WAN while providing internet access to your laptop and potentially other devices connected wirelessly or via other LAN ports.
