Can we apply oil to a newborn?

Published in Newborn Skincare 1 min read

Generally, it is not recommended to apply oil to a newborn, particularly in the first month.

According to the NHS, it's best to avoid using oils or lotions on newborns until they are at least one month old. This is because a newborn's skin is very delicate and easily damaged.

Why Wait?

  • Thin Skin: A newborn's skin is significantly thinner than adult skin, making it more vulnerable to irritation and absorption of substances.
  • Developing Barrier: Over the first month (and sometimes longer for premature babies), the baby's skin matures and develops its own protective barrier. Introducing oils or lotions too early can interfere with this natural process.

When is it Okay?

After the first month, you can consider using baby-safe oils and lotions. Always test a small area of skin first to check for any adverse reactions.
