How to Make Oatmeal Softer?

Published in Oatmeal Cooking 2 mins read

To get softer oatmeal, slightly overcook it.

While it may seem counterintuitive, cooking your oatmeal a bit longer than the package instructions suggest is the key to achieving a creamier, softer texture. Standard cooking times often leave the oats slightly undercooked.

Here's how to do it:

  • Cook for at least 8 minutes: Instead of strictly following the time on the packaging, simmer your oatmeal for a minimum of 8 minutes, stirring frequently. This allows the oats to fully absorb the liquid and break down, resulting in a softer consistency.
  • Use the right liquid ratio: Ensure you're using enough liquid (water or milk) according to your desired consistency. More liquid generally leads to softer oatmeal. Experiment to find your preferred ratio.
  • Choose the right oats: Rolled oats tend to yield a softer texture than steel-cut oats, which remain chewier even with longer cooking times. Quick-cooking oats will soften fastest but can sometimes become mushy.
  • Stir frequently: Regular stirring helps prevent the oatmeal from sticking to the bottom of the pot and promotes even cooking. This will contribute to a smoother, softer final product.
  • Let it rest: After cooking, let the oatmeal sit for a minute or two. This allows the residual heat to further soften the oats.

By slightly extending the cooking time and paying attention to the liquid ratio, stirring, and oat type, you can easily achieve a wonderfully soft and creamy bowl of oatmeal.
