How many fingers do you need to open for delivery?

Published in Obstetrics 1 min read

To assess cervical dilation during labor, healthcare providers typically use two fingers for an internal examination.

The purpose of this examination is to determine how much the cervix has opened (dilated) in preparation for childbirth. The measurement is typically given in centimeters (cm). When fully dilated, the cervix measures approximately 10 cm, at which point it should no longer be present in front of the presenting fetal part, allowing for the baby's descent.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  • The Examination: A healthcare provider will insert two gloved fingers into the vagina to assess the cervix.
  • Dilation Measurement: They will estimate the diameter of the cervical opening using their fingers. The space between two fingers when stretched is about 7-8 cm.
  • Full Dilation: Full dilation, considered complete for delivery, is 10 cm.

Therefore, while the goal is to reach 10cm dilation, the assessment itself primarily utilizes two fingers.
