How many oceans are there?

Published in Oceanography 1 min read

There are five recognized oceans on Earth: the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, and the Southern Ocean.

Historically, only four oceans were recognized: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic. However, most countries, including the United States, now acknowledge the Southern (Antarctic) Ocean as the fifth ocean. The Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans are the most well-known, while the Southern Ocean is considered the "newest" named ocean.

The five oceans are distinct bodies of water, but they are all interconnected and form one global ocean. The Southern Ocean is unique because it encircles Antarctica and is defined by its unique currents and ecosystems.
