How were the oceans divided?

Published in Oceanography 1 min read

The oceans are divided into five distinct regions, though technically, there's one global ocean. According to oceanographers and the countries of the world, the divisions are primarily for organizational and geographical purposes.

Ocean Divisions

The global ocean is divided into the following five regions:

  • The Pacific Ocean
  • The Atlantic Ocean
  • The Indian Ocean
  • The Arctic Ocean

While these are the primary divisions, other bodies of water exist, but these are generally considered parts of the larger oceans. Oceanographers and geographers find these divisions useful for study, conservation efforts, and navigation.
