Is the Black Sea Hot or Cold?

Published in Oceanography 1 min read

The Black Sea's temperature varies significantly depending on depth and season, making it neither consistently hot nor cold.

  • Surface Temperatures: In summer, the surface layer warms up considerably, reaching temperatures between 73 and 79°F (23 and 26°C).
  • Deep Water Temperatures: However, at depths of approximately 160 to 240 feet (50 to 75 meters), a cold layer persists at around 45°F (7°C). The temperature remains stable at winter levels at greater depths.

Therefore, whether the Black Sea is "hot" or "cold" depends entirely on which depth and time of year you are referring to. The surface can be relatively warm in summer, while the deeper waters remain consistently cold.
