How Long Is Peanut Oil Good For?

Published in Oil Shelf Life 2 mins read

Peanut oil's shelf life depends on whether it's opened and how it's stored. Unopened, it lasts for approximately 12 months. Once opened, the shelf life reduces to about six months. Proper storage significantly impacts this timeframe.

Extending the Life of Your Peanut Oil

Several factors contribute to how long peanut oil remains usable:

  • Storage: Keeping peanut oil in a cool, dark place is crucial. Refrigeration, especially after opening, extends its lifespan by several months. Some sources even suggest freezing peanut oil for longer-term storage.
  • Signs of Spoilage: A rancid smell, like old crayons, indicates the oil has gone bad and should be discarded. Cloudiness might simply be a result of fat solidification but should be considered alongside other factors.
  • Reuse after Deep Frying: While you can reuse peanut oil multiple times within the six-month period after opening, it's essential to sterilize it before each use. High-heat frying shortens the usable life of the oil, and it should only be used for roughly 20-30 minutes at temperatures above 375°F (190°C).

Beyond the Expiration Date

Even after the recommended shelf life, peanut oil may still be usable if it shows no signs of rancidity (off smell). However, relying on the smell test alone is not sufficient; it is best to adhere to the guidelines above to maximize the oil's safety and quality.
