How do you liquify olive oil?

Published in Olive Oil Storage 2 mins read

To liquify olive oil that has solidified, gently warm it.

Olive oil can solidify when stored at temperatures below 50°F (10°C). This doesn't harm the oil, and it's easily reversible. Here's the best way to bring it back to its liquid state:

Simple Method: Warm Water Bath

This is the most common and recommended method.

  1. Fill a sink or pot with hot (not boiling) water. The water should be warm enough to melt the oil but not so hot that it could damage the bottle or degrade the oil. Around 100-120°F (38-49°C) is ideal.

  2. Place the glass olive oil bottle into the hot water. Ensure the water level is high enough to submerge most of the oil, but be careful not to get any water inside the bottle.

  3. Wait and monitor. The heat from the water will gradually melt the solidified olive oil. This may take 15-30 minutes, depending on how much oil is solidified and the size of the bottle.

  4. Gently swirl or shake the bottle periodically. This helps distribute the heat and speed up the melting process.

  5. Remove the bottle from the water when the oil is completely liquid. Dry the bottle thoroughly before storing it.

Important Considerations:

  • Avoid Microwaving: Microwaving olive oil is generally not recommended as it can cause uneven heating and potentially degrade the oil's quality and flavor.

  • Avoid Direct Heat: Do not place the olive oil bottle directly on a stovetop or in an oven, as this could cause the bottle to crack or shatter.

  • Be Patient: Liquifying olive oil is best done slowly and gently to preserve its quality.

Why Does Olive Oil Solidify?

Olive oil is composed of various fatty acids, some of which have higher melting points than others. At cooler temperatures, these higher-melting-point fatty acids can solidify, causing the oil to appear cloudy or even completely solid. This is a natural process and doesn't indicate that the oil is spoiled.
