How to Merge Text Boxes in OneNote

Published in OneNote Merging 2 mins read

To merge text boxes, officially known as note containers, in OneNote, you can easily combine them using the SHIFT key and drag functionality on the same page.

In OneNote, content like text, images, and tables are placed within boundaries called note containers. These act like movable text boxes on your page. If you have multiple containers with text that you want to consolidate into one, you can merge them directly.

Steps to Merge Note Containers

Merging note containers is a straightforward process involving a simple drag-and-drop action while holding a specific key. Based on the method described:

  1. Locate the First Container: Move your mouse pointer over a paragraph of text within the first note container you intend to merge.
  2. Prepare to Drag: Hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard.
  3. Grab the Container: Click the move handle. This is typically the gray bar or handle that appears near the top edge of the note container when you hover your pointer over it.
  4. Drag and Merge: While continuously holding down SHIFT, drag the move handle of the first note container directly over any other note container on the same page that you want to combine it with.
  5. Complete the Merge: Release the SHIFT key once you see the contents of the note containers have merged together visually.

Following these steps combines the text from the first container into the second container, resulting in a single, unified note container containing all the merged text. This is a quick way to tidy up your notes and consolidate related information that might have been initially placed in separate boxes.
