How does sky mirror work?

Published in Optical Art 1 min read

A sky mirror uses angled mirrors to reflect the sky, creating a unique visual effect.

The Sky Mirror setup uses mirrors to capture and reflect the sky above and around it. The reference describes a specific arrangement that involves:

  • A large, fixed mirror: A 5' square pole-mounted mirror, angled to reflect the overhead sky. This provides a base reflection of the sky.

  • A smaller, adjustable mirror: This mirror is adjustable by the viewer and angled to reflect a section of the sky, from overhead to the horizon. By adjusting this mirror, the viewer can select a transect of the sky to view.

The result is an artistic representation of the sky, almost like a painting made up of different shades of blue. The adjustability allows for a dynamic viewing experience.
