How to Use a Brush Between Teeth

Published in Oral Hygiene 3 mins read

To use a brush between teeth, often referred to as an interdental brush, you gently insert it into the space between two teeth and move it back and forth to clean away plaque and food debris.

Using a brush designed for cleaning between your teeth is an effective way to supplement your regular brushing routine. These small brushes come in various sizes and are designed to reach areas your toothbrush might miss, helping to prevent gum disease and cavities.

Here’s a simple guide on how to use an interdental brush effectively:

  1. Choose the Right Size: Interdental spaces vary throughout your mouth. It's important to select a brush size that fits comfortably without needing to be forced. You may need several different sizes for different areas.
  2. Position the Brush: For many areas, including between the front teeth, you can use a straight interdental brush. Hold the brush handle and guide the brush head towards the space between your teeth, right above the gum line.
  3. Insert Gently: Insert the brush gently between your teeth. Find the natural gap and guide the brush into it.
  4. Avoid Forcing: Do not force the brush into a space. Forcing can damage your gums. If the brush doesn't fit easily, work it in gently or choose a smaller size.
  5. Clean with Back-and-Forth Motion: Once the brush is in the space, move the interdental brush full length back and forth a few times. This action helps to dislodge plaque and food particles.
  6. Clean All Spaces: Repeat this process for all the spaces between your teeth where the brush fits. Don't forget the back teeth, which may require a brush with an angled head or a bendable neck for easier access.
  7. Rinse: Rinse the brush under water after use to clean it. Some brushes are reusable for several days; follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Practical Tip: It's often helpful to use a mirror when you first start using interdental brushes to ensure you are inserting them correctly and not damaging your gums.

Using an interdental brush daily, in addition to regular brushing, significantly improves oral hygiene and helps maintain healthy gums and teeth.
