What is the CFL Test?

Published in Orthopedic Assessment 1 min read

The CFL test, often referred to as the Talar Tilt Test, is primarily used to assess the integrity of the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) in the ankle.

Understanding the CFL Test

The Talar Tilt Test aims to evaluate the stability of the ankle joint by stressing the CFL, one of the major ligaments on the outside of the ankle. While primarily assessing the CFL, it can also provide insights into the condition of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL).

How the Test is Performed

The test is conducted with the ankle in a neutral position. The examiner then tilts the talus bone (a bone in the ankle) into adduction (inward tilting) and abduction (outward tilting). The degree of tilt and any pain experienced by the patient are noted.

Interpretation of Results

Excessive tilting, especially with pain, suggests a possible tear or sprain of the CFL. The amount of tilt is compared to the uninjured ankle to determine the severity of the injury.
