Preparing for Installation

Published in Outdoor Blinds Installation 5 mins read

Installing external roller blinds involves preparing the area, gathering tools, and carefully following mounting instructions, typically starting with unpacking and checking the included documentation.

Before you begin the installation process for your external roller blinds, it's crucial to take a few initial steps to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Unpack and Check Contents

Before starting carefully unpack. Your shades and mounting hardware. This is the essential first step. Carefully remove all items from the packaging.

Check the printed instructions included with your product to familiarize yourself with the contents of your box. Compare the items you've unpacked against the parts list in the instructions. Ensure you have all the necessary components, such as:

  • The roller blind itself
  • Mounting brackets (usually two or three, depending on the blind width)
  • Screws and fasteners appropriate for the mounting surface (e.g., wood screws, masonry anchors)
  • A control mechanism (chain, crank, or motor and remote)
  • End caps or decorative covers
  • Any specific installation templates or guides provided

Familiarizing yourself with each part will make the installation steps much clearer.

Assess Your Mounting Surface

External roller blinds are typically mounted outside the window frame (outside mount). Examine the surface where you plan to install the brackets (e.g., wall, fascia board, inside the porch opening). Note the material (wood, brick, concrete, vinyl siding) as this determines the type of fasteners you'll need.

Essential Tools & Materials

Having the right tools on hand will make the installation faster and more accurate.

  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Level (preferably a long one)
  • Drill
  • Drill bits (sized appropriately for pilot holes and fasteners)
  • Screwdriver (or a drill bit for driving screws)
  • Safety glasses
  • Step ladder (if necessary)

The Step-by-Step Installation Process

While specific steps may vary slightly depending on the blind manufacturer and mounting type (wall mount, ceiling mount, etc.), the general process for an outside mount is as follows:

  1. Measure and Mark Bracket Locations:

    • Refer to your product's specific instructions for recommended spacing. Typically, brackets are placed a few inches from the ends of the blind roll.
    • Using your level, mark the desired position for the first bracket.
    • Measure horizontally from that mark to the location for the second bracket (and any intermediate brackets), using your level to ensure the marks are perfectly aligned horizontally. Accuracy here is critical for the blind to hang straight and operate correctly.
    • Mark the screw hole positions for each bracket based on the bracket's design.
  2. Drill Pilot Holes:

    • Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the diameter of your screws.
    • Drill pilot holes at each marked screw position. This helps prevent the surface material from splitting and makes driving screws easier. For masonry, you'll need a masonry bit and likely wall anchors.
  3. Install the Mounting Brackets:

    • Hold a bracket in place, aligning its holes with the pilot holes.
    • Drive the appropriate screws or fasteners through the bracket holes and into the mounting surface.
    • Repeat for all brackets, ensuring they are securely fastened and still perfectly aligned.
  4. Attach the Roller Shade:

    • Most brackets have a mechanism to easily clip or slide the roller shade into place. One end of the shade mechanism (often the idle end) is typically inserted first, followed by the control end (chain or motor).
    • Align the ends of the roller tube with the bracket mechanisms.
    • Secure the blind into the brackets according to your specific instructions. You may hear a click when it's properly seated.
  5. Install Control Mechanism and Accessories:

    • Attach the chain, crank, or connect the motor power source as per instructions.
    • Install any safety devices, such as child safety cleats for chains.
    • Add any decorative end caps or covers to the brackets or blind ends.

Key Considerations for External Blinds

  • Weather Resistance: Ensure all components, especially fasteners, are suitable for outdoor use and resistant to corrosion.
  • Level Installation: A level blind is essential for smooth operation and appearance. Double-check your bracket alignment.
  • Testing: Gently operate the blind up and down to ensure it moves freely and rolls evenly.

By carefully following these steps and consulting the specific instructions that came with your product, you can successfully install your external roller blinds.
