Water-activated paper tape, also known as gummed paper tape, features a dry adhesive that becomes sticky when exposed to water. This type of tape forms a strong bond directly with the cardboard fibers of a box, often creating a more secure closure than standard pressure-sensitive tapes.

Here's how to properly apply water-activated paper tape based on common usage:

Step-by-Step Application

The process involves a few straightforward steps to ensure the tape adheres correctly and provides a strong, tamper-evident seal.

  • Step 1: Identify the Application Side
    • Locate the side of the tape that needs water. This is typically the non-printed side where the dry adhesive is located.
  • Step 2: Activate the Adhesive
    • Apply water to the adhesive side of the tape. As indicated, you can do this by hand using a sponge or a dedicated tape dispenser with a moistening mechanism. Ensure the adhesive is evenly moistened but not saturated.
  • Step 3: Apply to the Box
    • Immediately after activating the adhesive, place the tape on your box along the seams you wish to seal.
  • Step 4: Ensure Proper Bonding
    • Once the tape is in position, smooth it over with your hands to press it firmly onto the box surface and remove any air bubbles. This ensures maximum contact between the activated adhesive and the cardboard.
    • Allow the tape time to bond. Thirty seconds after application, the tape will create a strong bond to your box. The full strength may develop over a few minutes, but the initial bond is typically formed within 30 seconds.
