Water-activated gum tape, also known as gummed paper tape or gummed tape, is a type of adhesive tape that relies on moisture to become sticky. Its adhesive is typically starch-based, although an animal glue based adhesive can also be used. This adhesive is applied to a backing, usually kraft paper.
How it Works
Unlike pressure-sensitive tapes that require only pressure to adhere, water-activated tape needs to be moistened before application. When water is applied to the adhesive surface, it reactivates the dried glue, making it tacky and creating a strong bond with the surface it is applied to.
Key Characteristics
- Adhesive: Starch-based or animal glue-based.
- Activation: Requires water to become sticky.
- Backing: Commonly uses kraft paper.
- Bond: Forms a strong, often tamper-evident, bond.
Common Applications
Water activated tape is often used for closing and sealing boxes, particularly in shipping and packaging environments. Its strong bond helps secure packages during transit.
