How to Keep Paint Brushes After Painting

Published in Paint Brush Care 3 mins read

Maintaining your paint brushes properly after painting is crucial for their longevity and performance.

Keeping paint brushes after painting involves a thorough cleaning process followed by correct storage to preserve their shape and condition.

The key steps are cleaning, drying, reshaping, and storing properly. Following these steps ensures your brushes remain ready for your next project.

Cleaning Your Paint Brushes

Proper cleaning removes paint residue and prevents bristles from hardening or becoming damaged. Based on best practices:

  1. Wash Thoroughly: Wash the brush with soap and water to remove any leftover paint. If you used oil-based paint, this first step might involve cleaning with the appropriate solvent (like mineral spirits or paint thinner) before washing with soap and water to remove the leftover solvent. For water-based paints, soap and water is sufficient.
  2. Remove Excess Liquid: After washing, slap the brush gently against the edge of your work table or a deck railing to get rid of surplus water or cleaning solvent. This helps dry the brush efficiently.
  3. Rinse and Repeat (if necessary): Keep washing and rinsing until no paint residue comes out of the brush.

Reshaping and Drying

Once clean, reshaping and drying correctly prevents bristles from fanning out or bending permanently.

  • Reshape Bristles: Gently reshape the bristles by hand or use a dedicated paint brush comb while they are still damp. This helps the brush retain its original form.
  • Dry Correctly: Do not dry brushes flat or standing on their bristles. Hang the brush vertically with the bristles facing downward. This allows gravity to pull remaining moisture away from the ferrule (the metal part) and prevents water damage or the glue holding the bristles from weakening.

Storing Paint Brushes

After your brushes are completely dry and reshaped, proper storage protects them from dust and prevents damage.

  • Use a brush keeper, a jar, or a container where the brushes can hang or stand without the bristles touching the bottom.
  • Ensure the storage area is clean, dry, and away from extreme temperatures.

Following these steps, from washing away leftover solvent or paint to hanging vertically bristles-down, will significantly extend the life of your valuable paint brushes.
