How Do You Move in Paint?

Published in Paint Software 2 mins read

To move a selection in Paint, use the select tool to box-select the area you want to move, then click and drag the selection to its new location.

Here's a breakdown of the process and important considerations:

Steps to Move a Selection in Paint

  1. Select the "Select" Tool: In the Paint toolbar, click on the "Select" tool (it usually looks like a dotted rectangle).
  2. Box Select the Area: Click and drag the mouse to create a rectangular selection around the part of the image you want to move. Ensure the entire object or area is enclosed within the selection box.
  3. Click and Drag: Once selected, click inside the selected area. Hold down the mouse button and drag the selection to the desired location.
  4. Release the Mouse Button: Release the mouse button to finalize the move. The selected area will now be in its new position.

Important Considerations

  • Background Color: By default, when you move a selection, any underlying pixels will be replaced with the background color. As the reference video notes, if your background color is white, white pixels will cover up anything underneath.
  • Transparent Selection (Optional): To avoid covering underlying pixels with the background color, you can set the selection mode to "Transparent selection." Usually, this option is available within the "Select" tool menu or properties. With transparent selection enabled, only the non-background-colored parts of your selection will be moved.
  • Moving the Entire Image: To move the entire image, you'll first need to select the entire canvas using the "Select All" option (usually found in the "Select" tool dropdown or under the "Edit" menu). Then, you can click and drag the entire image. Be aware that doing this might result in parts of the image being cut off at the edges of the canvas if you move it too far.
  • Moving Layers (If Available): Some more advanced Paint versions or alternative graphics editors may support layers. If your program has layers, ensure you are selecting and moving the correct layer.
