How do you change yellow paint to white?

Published in Painting Basics 2 mins read

You cannot directly change yellow paint to white paint by adding anything to it. You will never achieve a true white.

Here's why:

  • White is a Primary Color (Technically, the Absence of Color): White is often considered a primary "color" in painting because it's foundational. It reflects all wavelengths of light, appearing colorless. You can't create it by mixing other colors. It's the absence of pigment.

  • Subtractive Color Mixing: Paint uses subtractive color mixing. This means that each color added absorbs certain wavelengths of light and reflects others. When you mix colors, you are essentially subtracting more wavelengths, making the mixture darker, not lighter. Adding something to yellow paint will only darken or change the hue of the yellow, but it will not create white.

  • Attempts will only result in tinted shades: If you attempt to lighten yellow by adding a lighter color, you'll create a lighter shade of yellow. Adding white will produce a pastel yellow, but not white.

In short, the only way to achieve white is to cover the yellow paint with white paint.
