How Do You Apply Paint to a Roller?

Published in Painting Techniques 1 min read

Applying paint to a roller correctly is essential for even coverage and a professional finish. Here's how to do it:

  1. Load the Roller: Dip the roller into the paint tray, ensuring only about half of the roller cover is submerged. Avoid completely saturating the roller, as this will cause drips and uneven application.
  2. Roll Off Excess: Roll the loaded roller back and forth on the textured ramp of the paint tray. This distributes the paint evenly across the roller cover and removes excess paint, preventing drips and ensuring a consistent coat. Continue rolling until the roller cover is fully and evenly coated with paint.
  3. Apply to the Wall (or Surface): When painting, work in sections of approximately 2x2 feet. Roll in a general direction to initially apply the paint; the direction doesn't matter initially. Then, smooth the paint by making a series of single roller passes from top to bottom to achieve even coverage.
