How do you transfer pencil drawings to canvas?

Published in Painting Techniques 2 mins read

Transferring a pencil drawing to canvas for painting typically involves tracing the drawing onto the canvas. Here's how it's done:

  1. Prepare your materials: You'll need your pencil drawing, the canvas, transfer paper (graphite paper), tape, a stylus or pen, and optionally, matte medium or clear gesso.

  2. Prepare the Canvas (optional): According to the reference, if you are transferring to a wood panel, prime it with matte medium or clear gesso to protect the wood.

  3. Position and Secure: Place the transfer paper graphite-side down on the canvas where you want the drawing to appear. Put your pencil drawing on top of the transfer paper, aligning it precisely. Use tape to secure both the drawing and transfer paper to the canvas to prevent them from shifting.

  4. Trace the Drawing: Using a stylus, pen, or hard pencil, carefully trace over all the lines of your pencil drawing. Apply consistent pressure to ensure the graphite transfers cleanly onto the canvas.

  5. Check the Transfer: Lift a corner of the drawing and transfer paper to check if the lines have transferred adequately. If not, replace and trace the area again with more pressure.

  6. Remove and Finalize: Once the entire drawing is transferred, carefully remove the drawing and transfer paper from the canvas. You should now have a faint outline of your drawing on the canvas.

  7. Optional Refinement: If desired, you can lightly go over the transferred lines with a pencil to darken them and make them more visible before painting.
