How do you use foil on a painting?

Published in Painting Techniques 2 mins read

One way to use foil on a painting is by adhering it with double-sided tape. Here's how:

Applying Foil with Double-Sided Tape

This is a relatively simple method for adding metallic foil accents to abstract or other types of paintings.

  1. Prepare Your Painting: Ensure your painting is dry and ready to receive the foil.

  2. Apply Double-Sided Tape: Cut pieces of double-sided tape into the shapes you desire. This could be straight lines, geometric shapes, organic forms, or anything else that suits your artistic vision. Adhere these tape pieces to the areas of your painting where you want the foil to be.

  3. Place the Transfer Foil: Position a piece of transfer foil over the taped areas. The shiny, colored side of the foil should be facing up.

  4. Burnish the Foil: Gently rub or burnish the back of the foil (the dull side) with your fingers or a soft tool. This pressure transfers the foil from the sheet to the adhesive tape.

  5. Peel Away the Foil Sheet: Carefully peel away the foil sheet. The foil should now be adhered to the areas where the double-sided tape was applied, leaving behind a metallic accent on your painting.

This method allows for precise placement and control over the foiled areas of your artwork.
