How Do You Apply Paint Samples to Walls?

Published in Painting Tips 2 mins read

The best way to apply paint samples for evaluation isn't directly to the wall, but rather to a sample board.

Using Paint Sample Boards

Instead of painting directly on your walls, follow these steps for the best method of evaluating paint colors:

  • Acquire Sample Boards: Purchase 24-inch x 24-inch drywall squares. These are available at retailers such as Home Depot and Lowes.
  • Apply the Paint: Apply two coats of your chosen paint sample to the drywall square.
  • Evaluate: Hold the painted sample board up against different areas of the walls within the room. This will allow you to see how the color looks in various lighting conditions and against different backdrops.

Why Use Sample Boards?

Using sample boards provides several benefits:

  • Avoid Damage: You won't have to paint directly onto your walls multiple times.
  • Portability: You can move the sample around the room easily to see how the color looks in different locations.
  • Better View: A small patch on the wall may not give a great sense of the overall color. A larger sample provides a more realistic preview.
  • Reusability: These sample boards can be reused for future projects.
  • Flexibility: You can see what the paint will look like against different furniture or decor in your room.
