How much oil does palm oil produce?

Published in Palm Oil Production 1 min read

Palm oil crops globally produce approximately 81 million tonnes of oil annually. This impressive yield is achieved from roughly 19 million hectares of land.

In comparison to other major vegetable oil crops, palm oil exhibits remarkable efficiency. Soybean and rapeseed, the second and third largest vegetable oil crops, combined produce about 84 million tonnes of oil. However, this output requires over 163 million hectares of land, significantly more than palm oil's land usage. This highlights palm oil's substantially higher yield per hectare compared to other vegetable oil sources.

Therefore, while the total oil production between palm oil and soybean/rapeseed is comparable, palm oil achieves this with a much smaller land footprint.
