How to Change Lock Screen Password Windows 11?

Published in Password Management 2 mins read

Changing your Windows 11 lock screen password can be accomplished using the following methods. Please note that the availability of some methods depends on your account type and setup.

Resetting Your Password from the Lock Screen

If you've forgotten your password and have set up security questions, you can reset it directly from the lock screen:

  1. On the lock screen, enter an incorrect password to reveal the “Reset password” option.
  2. Click “Reset password”.
  3. Answer the security questions you set up when you first configured your account.
  4. Create a new password after answering the questions correctly. (Reference: 05-Jul-2024)

Changing Your Password Through Settings

This method is suitable if you remember your current password.

  1. Open the Settings app. You can do this by pressing the Windows key + I.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Select Sign-in options.
  4. Find the Password section and click Change.
  5. You'll be prompted to enter your current password.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a new password and confirm it.
  7. You may also be prompted to create a password hint to help you remember it.

Using Ctrl+Alt+Delete

This is a classic method that works in many versions of Windows.

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard.
  2. Select Change a password.
  3. Enter your old password, then enter your new password twice to confirm it.
  4. Press Enter or click the arrow button.

Microsoft Account vs. Local Account

The steps may vary slightly depending on whether you are using a Microsoft account or a local account. For a Microsoft account, changing the password will change it across all Microsoft services. For a local account, the password change is specific to that computer.

Considerations

  • Password Strength: Always choose a strong password that is difficult to guess. A strong password typically includes a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Password Hint: Create a password hint that is helpful to you but not obvious to others.
  • Account Type: Remember if you're using a Microsoft account or a local account, as the password change process and implications differ.
