How do you blend chalk pastels on paper?

Published in Pastel Techniques 2 mins read

Blending chalk pastels on paper involves layering and smoothing the pastel pigment to create smooth transitions and effects. The basic principle is to work from light to dark areas.

Here's a breakdown of common techniques:

  • Layering: Apply pastel in thin layers. This allows you to gradually build up color and blend more effectively.

  • Fingers: This is a common method. Gently rub your finger in small, circular motions across the pastel strokes to blend them. Be careful not to over-blend, which can muddy the colors. Wipe your fingers frequently to avoid transferring unwanted colors.

  • Blending Stumps/Tortillons: These are tightly rolled paper tools used for blending. They offer more control than fingers and are ideal for smaller areas or details. Use a clean stump or wipe it off between colors to prevent contamination.

  • Paper Towels/Cloths: Use a soft cloth or paper towel to gently buff the pastels together. This is useful for creating soft, diffused effects or blending large areas.

  • Blending Brushes: Soft, synthetic brushes can be used to lightly blend pastels. Choose brushes specifically designed for pastels to avoid damaging your paper.

  • Working Light to Dark: Begin by applying lighter colors first, then gradually layer darker colors on top. This prevents the darker colors from overwhelming the lighter shades and makes blending easier. If you start with dark colors, it will be difficult to lighten the area.

  • Using the Side of the Pastel: Apply pastel with the side, instead of the tip, for broader strokes, which create soft edges which are easier to blend.
