In-circuit testing (ICT) is a critical quality control step used in the manufacturing of printed circuit boards (PCBs).

ICT stands for In-circuit testing. As defined, it is a type of white box testing specifically applied to populated PCBs.

  • Purpose: The primary goal of ICT is to verify that a PCB assembly was correctly fabricated by electrically testing individual components and the connections between them.
  • Method: This testing is performed using an electrical probe system that physically contacts specific points (test points) on the populated PCB.

What Does ICT Check?

Using the electrical probes, ICT equipment can test the circuit to identify manufacturing defects. According to the reference, ICT checks for:

  • Shorts: Unintended low-resistance connections between two points that should not be connected.
  • Opens: Breaks in the circuit where continuity should exist.
  • Resistance: Verifying the resistance values of resistors.
  • Capacitance: Verifying the capacitance values of capacitors.
  • Other basic quantities: This can include inductance, diode orientation, and the presence of components.

By performing these checks, ICT can quickly detect assembly errors like misplaced components, incorrect component values, soldering issues, or faulty components before further testing or final assembly of the product.

Why is ICT Important for PCB Manufacturing?

Implementing ICT in the production process offers several benefits:

  • Early Defect Detection: Catches manufacturing defects early in the process, reducing the cost and complexity of rework compared to finding issues at a later stage (like functional testing).
  • Manufacturing Process Feedback: Provides valuable data on the types and frequency of defects, helping manufacturers identify and improve issues in their assembly process.
  • High Throughput: ICT testers are typically automated and can test PCBs very quickly, making them suitable for high-volume production environments.
  • Isolation of Faults: Can often pinpoint the exact location and type of fault (e.g., "short between net X and net Y" or "component C1 is missing").

ICT vs. Other PCB Tests

ICT is just one method of testing PCBs. It differs from functional testing, which tests the PCB's overall operation and performance, often acting like the final product would. While functional testing verifies if the board works as designed, ICT verifies if the board was assembled correctly.
